  • Upper Canada Rebellion

    Upper Canada Rebellion
    In Upper Canada (as in Lower Canada), part of the population was very critical with how the colony was being governed. This caused a rebellion because the population was not happy with the Council's control over revenues and expenses, an executive not responsible to the elected Assembly, the council's control of the provincial civil service, and the council's control of the clergy, reserves in the province, the Council's land-granting policies
  • The Durham Report

    The Durham Report
    After the uprisings, John Colborne dissolved the House of Assembly and appointed a special council to administer Lower Canada. In 1841 England was becoming worried about the riots happing in Upper Canada. So upper canada appointed John George Lambton in 1838 to conduct an investigation. In 1839 John presented his report. His main goal was to restore peace.

    Underground Railway
    The underground railway is not extended further then from Saint John to Shediac, because of the lack of money. To complete the railway investers would have to borrow large sums of money, which the british banks were unwilling to lend them. The British banks told them that they would only lend them the money if they came together to form 1 colony. They thought this because it would give the colony's new markets in the Maritimes for their products.

    After the american civil war the americans decided to try and "take over" the B.N.A and expand the U.S borders. The americans thought by doing this thay would gain power, wealth and resources. How did this lead to Confederation?
    The colonys were worried that the Americans would succseed in taking over, because of the threat the colony's thought about if they unite into a single conony how much stronger it would make them.It would solidify the borders, and create a strong federal goverment
  • Charlottetown Conference

    Charlottetown Conference
    In 1864, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island were considering the idea of a Maritime Union. Official Events started on the afternoon of September 1st. The Charlottetown Conference took place from September 1st to the 9th of1864.

    The Quebec conference was the second conference leading to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. The Quebec Conference took place from October 10th to the 27th of 1864. The conference took place in a building that used to stand where Chateau Frontenac stands today.

    Confederation receives Royal Assent
    The British North America Act received the Royal Assent on March 29, 1867. On this day, Confederation was officially put into effect.
