    Union of Upper and Lower Canada
    After the raging rebellions, Upper and Lower Canada merge into Canada East and Canada West. The whole idea of the situation came from Lord Durhams report, claiming there was one nation within the two. It was passed on July 23rd, 1840.
  • The Irish Famine 1845 - 1847

    The Irish Famine 1845 - 1847
    The Irish Catholics fleed to Quebec away from there home land since there was a disease called blight that attacts their potato crops which took away the food they relied on. Quebec did not have enough medical supplies for the incoming Irish Catholics. Irish Famine
  • Cholera

    Cholera
    Cholera was brought by the first settlers in Canada but durring the arrival of the Irish in 1845 -1847 cholera broke out again. Cholera became a very serious issue that threatened Quebec’s population. Quebec City was known to have riots who attacted hospitals. Canal Construction and Irish Immigration
  • Corn Laws Repealed

    The Corn Laws stated that any crop grown in any British territory would have minimal to no tariffs on them. This then caused economic troubles for Canada, due to a lack of money coming in. Until the Canada Corn Act, which meant that Britain had nominal tariffs, so they were not super low. In 1846, they decided no more, not even the Canada Corn Act.

    On the night of April 25, a public protest who were not happy with Lord Elgin for passing the Rebellion Losses bill turned into a riot; they invaded parliment, setting the building on fire.
  • Reciprocity begins between USA and Canada

    The two nations had been feuding for some time, and as things started to calm down, they began discussions of reducing the Tariffs for both nations. The ideas partially came from Lord Elgin, and he eventually signed the bill. From 1846 to 1850, reciprocity was discussed and experimented with from the Maritime provinces, until finally it was decided to be put into action by the countries and Britain.

    Did you know that one of the main reasons Ottawa is the fourth biggest city in Canada is because it is the capital? It wasnt a large city until it became the capital, and it became capital for quite strategic reasons.
    1. it was the only settlement of any significant size located right on the border of Canada East and Canada West
    2. all major canadian cities were more vunerable to attack
    3. it was in the middle of QC and Toronto, making it a great (literal) centre of a nation!

    A Comedic Opinon on the Fenians (From a great Canadian comedien) The Fenians were Irish men who wanted the British out of Ireland, so they attacked Ridgeway, Ontario (Which was British Territory). Approximately 47 Canadian soldiers died in the battle, Half of which were killed, the others died of diseases.
