  • Mercantilism

    -This system was used so that the colonies would have less tariffs when they trade with Great Britian.
    -As a result, BNA Colonies had a better economy

  • Repeal of Corn Laws

    -Grains that were brought in from Britian to British North American Colonies had lower taxes than if it was brought in from other countries
    -The British stopped the Corn Laws in 1864 and started trading without tariffs to get other things more cheaply. This affected the BNA Colonies' economies because they did not trade as much with Britian

  • Reciprocity Treaty

    -This is a treaty that let the BNA colonies trade with the USA without needing to pay tariffs/ taxes.
    -This caused economy to improve over the several years that the Reciprocity Treaty lasted.

  • Gold Rush (Fraser River)

    -This gold rush attracted many Americans to British Colombia and they were afraid that the USA were going to take over, so they decided to join Confederation.
    -The gold rush was another reason for Confederation

  • Charlottetown Conference

    -The United Provinces of Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island all attended the Charlottetown Conference.
    -The Maritime colonies decided to hold this conference because they wanted to consider joining together.
    -The United Provinces of Canada decided to attend the meeting to convince the Maritime colonies to join a larger union with them.
  • Quebec Conference

    -This conference was held to spend more time thinking about becoming a bigger union.
    -The same colonies came to this meeting but this time,
    -Newfoundland decided to join in and see what advantages they could get if they joined the rest of the colonies.
    -In the end, they decided to make a list called the 72 Resolutions, which the new Canada would be based on.

  • Manifest Destiny

    -The USA wanted to take over the British North American Colonies after the civil war
    -A group of Irish Ctholics called the Fenians decided to stop having British control over Ireland, so instead of raiding Britian, they decided to raid BNA Colonies

  • London Conference

    -The London Conference was the last (major) conference before Canada became a country.
    -This conference was held to bring the 72 Resolutions to the British Officals and to make minor changes.
    -Prince Edwdard Island and Newfoundland decided not to attend this conference because they didn't see any advantages from joining.
    -This conference lasted until February 1867. As a resoult, the country Canada was made. (Dates are not exact)
  • British North America Act

    -This act was made so that there would be a set of rules for the federal and provincial governments
    -The British North America Act was later called the Constitution Act
  • Confederation

    The United Province of Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia were the first colonies to get together as a federal union to be what is known as Canada today
    Here were some of the reasons for Confederation
    - Great Britian wanted them to have their own defence, so they decided that they would like the colonies to have more independence
    - The United States wanted to expand, so to prevent that, the colonies decided to prevent this by joining Confederation
    - For a better economy and to build railways
