  • Charlottetown Conference

    Charlottetown Conference

    This conference occurred to discuss confederation. They wanted to discuss a federal union as well as a maritime province. This province would combine PEI, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Ultimately, they decided that they would most likely join confederation as different provinces. There was a unanimous decision in support of federation as long as the terms were satisfactory for everyone. This conference is very significant because it was the first step on the way to making Canada.
  • Quebec Conference

    Quebec Conference

    This conference created the 72 resolutions. Those resolutions eventually became the BNA act which would be passed to create the dominion of Canada. This is significant because it made the first idea of what the country would be like and how it would be structured.
  • End of Reciprocity Treaty

    On this day the reciprocity treat between the US and the BNA colonies ended. This meant that there was no longer free trade between them. This was significant because it was one of the reasons for confederation. Due to the fact that the BNA colonies no longer had America to trade with, they wanted to make a federal union in order to have free trade with each other. This was one of many issues that contributed to Canada becoming a country

    London Conference

    The purpose of this conference was to make a bill to join confederation. They ended up making the BNA act which is the bill that created the dominion of Canada. Then the provinces included New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. This is significant because it created the bill that would create the country we know today, Canada.

    On this day, the BNA act came into effect. This act created the dominion of Canada. It had 4 provinces and the BNA act outlined everything that the federal government and provincial governments would be responsible for. This is significant because it was the beginning of the country of Canada.

    Purchase of Rupert’s land by Canada

    On this day Canada purchased Rupert's Land from the HBC. They bought it for only $1.5m since Great Britain pressured the HBC to sell it to Canada. England did this because they did not want the USA to buy it. They didn't want America to buy it because it would make them a very powerful country, which would be very threatening to Great Britain. This purchase is significant because it played a role in Canada's development as a country and had a large impact on what Canada is today.

    Death of Thomas Scott by Louis Riel

    After being charged with treason by Louis Riel's government, Thomas Scott was sent to court. In his trial Thomas Scott was found guilty of treason and he would later be executed. This is significant because it is one of the two controversial acts of treason Riel committed in his life. It is important because this lead to Louis being hanged and other events in his life and it continues to be a controversial topic to this day.

  • Manitoba Created

    Manitoba Created

    On this day Manitoba was created and joined confederation as the 5th province. Also Metis rights were recognized and they were granted some of what they had wanted. This was caused by Louis Riel and his red river resistance. This is very significant because it created one of the ten provinces we know today and Canada recognized Riel and what he was fighting for.
  • BC joins Confederation

    BC joins Confederation

    On this day BC joined Canada as the 6th province. They joined because they did not have a great economy and they were in debt. Also they would be ensured more safety and they could continue to be involved with Britain as Canada was closely connected with Britain. This is significant because this was the day BC joined Canada and it is still a part of Canada today.
  • PEI joins Confederation

    PEI joins Confederation

    On this day PEI joined confederation as the 7th province. they joined because they were in many financial troubles. After deciding not to join confederation in 1867, they decided to build a railway within their province to increase tourism and other forms of income but they went broke building it. So they joined confederation to get out of their financial troubles. This is significant because it is the day one of the 10 provinces we have today joined the country.
  • Louis Riel was hanged

    Louis Riel was hanged

    On this day Louis Riel was unfairly found guilty in a trial. It was said he committed treason and he was hanged for his punishment. This event is significant because Louis Riel is a very important Canadian figure and he (obviously) died on this day. Also this trial is very controversial and many people believe he did not deserve this punishment.
