    War of 1812
    This war was between America and Britain. Since Canada was a colony of Great Britain, it too was swept up into the war. War was declared for several reasons such as trade restrictions brought by the British
  • Battle of Seven Oaks

    Battle of Seven Oaks
    The Battle of Seven Oaks was a heated battle between the HBC and NWC who were rivals in the fur trade. 20 men were killed.
  • HBC Purchases Rupert's Land

    HBC Purchases Rupert's Land
    The Hudson's Bay Company purchased Rupert's Land to expand Canada's territory
  • HBC merges with the NWC

    HBC merges with the NWC
    After new fur trade regulations had been passed, the HBC and NWC decided to merge companies. Prior the the merging, the HBC had been more successful and the NWC had been struggling; resulting in combining both companies for better success.
  • Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada

    Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada
    Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada. Uprisings triggered dissatisfaction with the Family Compact and in result, rebellions in Upper aand Lower Canada.
  • The Durham Report

    The Durham Report
    After the rebellions, there were still some unresolved issues. Lord Durham was sent to investigate these issues. Durham proposed to unite Upper and Lower Canada. By uniting the two Canadas, the English would become dominant and the French Canadians would become a minority. On Januray 31st, 1839 the report was signed and became official

    Indian Reserve Law was Passed
    In 1839, Canada passed a law to protect Indian reserves. This law gave the natives a set amount of land that was reserved fr only them.
  • Upper Canda joins Lower Canda

    Upper Canda joins Lower Canda
    Joing Upper and Lower Canada toether terminated the exsisting legislatures of Upper and Lower Canada. Together, they came togther and formed a new political entity.
  • Treaty of Ghent is Signed

    Treaty of Ghent is Signed
    On December 24th 1841, the Treaty of Ghent was signed. The treaty signified all of the conquered territory that was to be returned, and commissions were made to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada.

    Manifest Destiny
    Manifest Destiny was the belief that America had the divine right to control all of North America. This idea was introduced on December 27th of 1845
  • Colony of Vancouver Island Created

    Colony of Vancouver Island Created
    The colony of Vancouver Island was officially founded on January 30th 1849. Later, it was merged into the province of B.C.
  • Fraser Canyon Gold Rush

    May 23d, 1855 marked the beginning of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rushin B.C.
  • Gold Rush

    Gold Rush
    In 1858, thousands of Chinese move from China and California for the Gold Rush in hopes of striking rich. Mostof the workers never found any rush and were paid less than $1 per day.

    The Charlettetown and Quebec Conferences were key conferences during Confederation. The conferences were held to discuss Confederation. Representatives from the colonies acroos North America came to these conferences

    The British government passed the British North America Act, creating the country of Canada. Canada was independent and divided responsibilities between provincial and federal government. The federal government was seperated into executive, legislative, and judicial.

    After Confederation had passed, Canada had officially become a country in 1867. It only had the four provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.
  • John A. Macdonald becomes Prime Minister

    John A. Macdonald becomes Prime Minister
    On July 1st, 1867, Father of Confederation, John A. Macdonald became Canada's first prime minister. John was for the Liberal-Conservative Party of Canada. He later resigned 6 years later in 1873.
  • Metis Form Provisional Government

    Louis Riel created a provisonal government with the Metis to establish and maintain order. Meris were able to negotiate with Confederation.
  • Red River Rebellion Begins

    Red River Rebellion Begins
    The Red River Rebellion began as a result to the 1869 establishment of a Provisional Government. Louis Riel established the Provisonal Government. The Rebellion ended when Louis Riel fled to America.
  • Residential Schools for Natives were Created

    Residential Schools for Natives were Created
    In 1870, the first of many residental schools were introduced. Children between the ages of 4-16 attended the residential schools. They were forced to speak and learn English ways; if not they ere punished. Today, Canada realizes the unfair treatment, and is working with the First Nations.
  • B.C. Becomes a Province

    B.C. Becomes a Province
    After Confederation, B.C. became a province on July 20th, 1871. Vancouver Island was also a part of B.C. as the decision was made to combine the two into one province for economic and geographic reasons.
  • NWMP are formed

    NWMP are formed
    The North West Mounted Police are formed as Canada's first official police force. This is an importnt event becasue having a police force defines Canada from America and gives Canada a sense of pride.
  • Chinese Head Tax was Introduced

    Chinese Head Tax was Introduced
    After the Chinese Immigration Act (1885) was passed in 1885, a new rule was introduced. Chinese immigrating or living in Canada were forced to pay a tax of $50; this woyld reduce the number of Chinese immigrants coming to live in Canada
  • Completion of the CPR

    Completion of the CPR
    On November 7th 1885 the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven. This was a special moment for all Candians as it meant te end of natural disasters, financial crises, and even rebellion. The railway was used as a mean of transportation for goods and a trade route.
  • Louis Riel was Hung

    Louis Riel was Hung
    Louis Riel came back from America hoping for a peaceful reunion with the Metis. But when he returned he was captured by the English, who were still angry that he killed Thomas Scott. This resulted in the hanging of Louis Riel.
