European Discovery
The first Europeans lead by Juan Diaz de Solis landed in Uruguay. They were met by indingenous people while exploring the Rio de la Plata river. They killed Diaz de Solis and many of his men. -
Cattle
The Spanish bring cattle to Urugay which will become a thriving agricultural resource. -
Montevideo
The future capital of Uruguay, Montevideo, was founded by the Spanish. -
Independence
After years of battles and negotiations, Uruguay declared its independence from Spain. -
Constitution
The first constitution of Uruguay was finialized five years after independence. -
Civil War
Civil War breaks out between the Blancos, who would become the future conervative party, and the Colorados, who would become thr future liberal party. -
President Jose Batlle y Ordonez
President Jose Batlle y Ordonez abolishes the death pentalty, estabilishes welfare, and created a seperation of church and state. -
Kidnap
The British ambassador to Uruguay, Geoffrey Jackson, was kidnapped by Tupamaros guerrillas. They held him captive for eight months until his final release in September 1971. -
Ecnomy Crisis
In search of work, 15% of Uruguay's population left the country during the economy crisis. -
Legal Cannabis
The government passed new laws allowing the legal sale of marijuana.
