Spain is a very old country, it became a part of the Roman empire in 206 B.C. There is however, no exact date on when it became it's own country. They do celebrate their independence day May 2. That is the date when the Spaniards revolted against the French.

In the year 711 - the Moors, or Muslims, invaded Spain and stayed there for 8 centuries. Also, the Moors had a big impact on Spain - they made important discoveries of medicine, math, sciences, etc.

The Spanish coast was colonized by Phoenicians around 1100 BC. These people were from the area that is presently known as Lebanon. The Phoenicians founded Cadiz, Malaga, Almunecar, and other cities that are still found in present day Spain.

King Fernando and Queen Isabel's army capture Granada after a long siege, the final defeat of the Moors in Spain. Jews are forced to convert to Christianity; those who refuse are expelled from Spain. Christopher Columbus sets sail on his voyage of discovery.

The Peninsular War took place between 1808 and 1814. This war was fought over the Iberian Peninsula and was part of the Napoleonic Wars. When France invaded Portugal and Spain, war was declared.

Spanish king is forced to abdicate. Spain becomes a republic.

Between 1936 and 1939 over 500,000 people were killed in the Spanish Civil War so this cannot be considered a 'little' war that was overshadowed by the problems that were occurring in Europe during these years.

In 1975 Franco died and the government of Spain becomes a constitutional monarchy.
