    Discovery of Isla de Alejandra
    Christopher Columbus discovered the Isla de Alejandra on November 15,1493 during his second voyage to the Americas. He quickly claimed the land and named it after his unknown daughter, Maria Alejandra Columbus. This piece of land was one of his most unknown discoveries. After his arrival, Isla of Alejandra became a Spanish Colony, ruled by a Spanish governor. The island was an important military center for Spain who was fighting with other countries that wanted to control the Caribbean region.

    The Volcano caused one of the biggest tragedies in the country. Up to 1632, the Furia Volcano remained silent. It was considered by many to be extinct. On June 15, 1632, the Volcano violently erupted. Crops were spoiled, property was ruined, and people and livestock were killed. Only few people in the area survived. This event is known as the Tragedy of Furia. What is of particular concern is that the capital city, Furia, is located at the base of the volcano. The volcano became active in 2011.

    On August 28, 1738, another tragedy struck the Isla de Alejandra. The Santa Rosa Hurricane caused extensive damage to houses and agriculture. Most of the country was badly affected and many sugarcane, fruits and coffee plantations were destroyed. This disaster is remembered for its major impact in the economy of the country. It led to the creation of rules for government to support the people and industries during major disasters.

    Isla of Alejandra was under the rule of Spain for over three centuries. Spanish governors were abusive. They were collecting high taxes and stealing from the people. This was making the people unhappy and angry. A series of small to end the Spanish rule were done but they were not successful. Many countries in America began fighting against Spain to become free. Isla of Alejandra formed a military group and fought against the Spanish’s armed force. The island became independent in 1874.

    Following the independence from Spain, the government of the island continued with slavery and limited rights for black people. Slaves were mostly used as workers in the sugarcane and coffee plantations. A group in the south of the island were against slavery and believed in equal rights for every body. This led to a civil war between the north and the south of the island. The civil war began in 1904 and ended on April 18, 1905 with the abolishment of slavery.

    In the years following the civil war, Isla of Alejandra saw significant economic development, but also political corruption and multiple bad leaders, including the dictatorship of Federico Baez Marquez. People didn't like his unfair rules. The Alejandra Revolution was an armed rebellion organized by a group politicians against the dictator. The revolution began in November 1963 and ended on December 17, 1965 when Baez was dethroned and the island started a democratic government.
