Mexico declared independence from Spain. Miguel Hidalgo (a priest) took part in the plotting against Spain, and wanted to attack soon. They succeeded (11 years later), and this battle was known as Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores).

Benito Juárez became the new Mexican president in 1861. He failed to pay the debts to Britain, Spain, and France. Britain and Spain became enraged and sent naval forces to get their money back. As to where France (Napoleon III), decided to conquer Mexican territory instead.

The French armies attacked Mexico with full force. Thus leaving the Mexican president and governement with no choice but to retreat.

On May 5th 1862, 6,000 French soldiers were planning on conquering Puebla de Los Angeles in Mexico. Those 6,000 men battled 2,000 loyal Mexican men for long hours. After 24 hours the French had reterated, and the Mexicans had gotten their victory.

In the year 1868, the United States and Mexico teamed together agianst France. They defeated the European country, and France withdrew from international business.

In today's society, Mexicans celebrate the 5th of May similar as to how we would celebrate a festival. It is just like a typical day. Along with that, there are parades (with the military), the Battle of Puebla is reenacted, other Mexican traditions are included, etc.
