    Queen Isabella and king Ferdinand marry

    While it doesn't seem like a big deal, it actually united Aragon and Castille.They were named the Catholic Monarchs.
    They took over the Spanish Inquisition from the church, making it making it their job to 'cleanse' Spain of non - catholics.Before F & I, Muslims and Jews were able to flee the country.Under Fernandad and Isabella's rule, they were placed in prison for life or executed.Some converted and some left.Those who converted were often brought before a court and tried.

    You had to convert to being a Catholic or be tourtured and die. People wanted to 'cleanse' Spain from all non - Catholics. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella saw the Muslims spreading and wanted to stop them.The spread of the Muslim faith was seen as a threat to Catholic unity.
    They believed it was their religious duty to spread Catholicism.

    Reconquista ended

    Spain was made up of 3 sections - Aragon, Castille and Cordoba.
    Aragon and Castille were Catholic states.
    In 711, the Catholic church decided it was time to get the Muslim groups out of Spain, so they organized a holy war.
    The Reconquista was, essentially, the reconquering of the Spanish lands to Catholic hands.

    Columbus, the first Spanish explorer, promised Ferdinand and Isabella that the new lands would have millions of people to convert. he found new land for the astecs to settle on.
