    Canada is Named
    Canada has had its name since the earliest Europen settlement. It's name originated from a first nations word "Kanata" which means settlement, village, or land.
  • Royal proclamation

    Royal proclamation
    King George III issued the Royal Proclamation. The proclamation said that the Americans couldnt settle or buy land West of the Appalachian mountains. This made the colonists mad because they already owned land in that area.
    The goal of the British was to stop conflicts that had arisenbetween the Native Americans and the colonists due to the French and Indian war. Settlers began to ignore the Proclamation line. Eventually the colonists were able to get the line moved further West.
  • Confederation

    Confederation
    During the years before Confederation, there was lots happening in colonies that eventually united to become Canada. In the 1860's British colonies were facing a lot of issues. One solution for these problems was for all the colonies to come together to form a country.
    On the day of Confederation three British colonies formed into four provinces; Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
    Sir John A. MacDonald is the first prime minister.

    Treaty 1 was an agreement between Queen Victoria and First Nation groups. The treaty covered South Eastern Manitoba

    Treaty 6 was an agreement between the Canadian monarch and the plain and wood Cree Indians and other tribes of Indians. the area that was agreed apon was the central part of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

    Treaty 7 was an agreement between Queen Victoria and several Blackfoot First Nations tribes in the southern part of Alberta.
  • Treaty #8

    treaty 8 was an agreement between Queen Victoria and various First Nation groups. It covers Nothern Alberta, North-Eastern British Columbia, North-West Saskatchewan, and a Southern part of the North West Territories.
  • Alberta & Saskatchewan become part of Canada

    When the two provinces became apart of Canada, Saskatchewan became the third largest in Canada. Alberta became the fifth largest.

    The Indian Act was an act that resoected the Indians. Its a Canadian act of parliament that includesRegistered Indians, their bands, and the system of Indian reserves. The act defines who is an Indian and contains certain legal rights for registered Indians.

    The First Nations final agreements are reached and worked on self government agreements begins.
  • The last residential school closes

    The Indian residential school system grew out of Canada's missionary expirience with religious organizations. the last residential school closed down in 1996.
  • nunavut is formed from the eastern part of the nwt

    nunavut is formed from the eastern part of the nwt
    IN 1999 Nunavut became the biggest territory in Canada. When Confederation occured, Native people were not asked what they thought about Canada becoming a counrty. the government of Canada took control of their land and that changed the Inuit way of life. in the 1970'sthe inuit began to talk to the government about creating a new territory called Nunavut. they wanted to make decisions for themselves istead of the government doing it for them.
