    Meeting of the Estates General
    Image and Information Source• A group of people were brought into the courtroom to try to solve the financial crisis that was upon France. Each social class, or estate was represented; the nobles, clergy, and the rest aka Third Estate. They all had one vote. The Third Estate could be overruled, fearing that they would be left with the financial burden they formed their own National Assembly. After being locked out of the meeting they promised to stay on a tennis court until a new constitution was pledged.
  • Fall of the Bastille

    Fall of the Bastille
    Image and Information source• A crowd of angry hungry, and unemployed Parisians marched on the Bastille. The commander of Bastille, Marquis de launay and his troops resisted only a few hour before they surrendered. King Louis XVI learned of the fall of the fortress and withdrew royal troops from the capital.

    Image and Information source • The people of France and Paris were STILL hungry, unemployed and angry. Eventually, bread prices had risen to an extreme amount; so the women rioted. The marched on Versailles, broke into the palace and demanded that the King and the Queen return to Paris. After a few hours they agreed to go back to Paris.

    Image and Information Source• The National Assembly continued to write the new constitution. The National Assembly had now imposed limits on authority(the king and the queen). This was appalling to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. They felt like prisoners so they attempted to leave France and go to Austria; hoping to regain power without limits. The attempt failed.

    Image and Information Source• The constitution was finished and put into effect. The National Assembly was dismissed and replaced by the Legislative Assembly. By the replacing the National Assembly there was loss of everyone who had valuable political experience

    Image and Information Source• War was a big issue among the Legislative Assembly. Louis XVI wanted war because he was afraid neighboring countries would try to overpower their new government. Revolutionists wanted war because they thought it would unify the country, and spread the ideas of France. Eventually, France declared war on Austria.

    Image and Information Source• The war still going on but now Austrian and Prussian forces were moving into their territory.Everything was falling apart, and the country was separated. The King and Queen escaped the palace and placed themselves under protection by the Legislative Assembly, they put them under arrest. The Revolution went crazy and people were now fleeing for their lives.

    Declaration of the Republic and the trial of Louis
    Image and Information Source• Now that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were arrested the National Convention replaced them. France was now a republic. The French Military had stalled Austrians and Prussians forces. Louis was trailed and found guilty of treason. On January 21, 1793 he was decapitated.

    Image and Information Source• At this point, the National Convention was overpowered by the Committee of Public safety. This followed with the “Reign of Terror”. It was called this because 16,000 people were killed. Leaders of the French Revolution had fled the country. The country needed help.

    Image and Information Source• Napoleon Bonaparte, a successful military commander had returned to France. Upon his return he created the Consulate. He made himself First Consul and was now the ruler.
