    Louis father dies and he becomes king during a time of great distress. People are hungry, unhappy, and the country is in great economic distress.

    Formation of the national assembly
    During May the king summoned a meeting of the estates generals in order to solve its financial crisis. There were three estates: the nobles, the clergy, and the third estate (citizens). Since they feared the financial burden since they could be out voted they made the national assembly. This caused them to be locked out of the estate generals.

    An angry mob of people stormed the bastille and destroyed it. To the citizens it symbolized everything they hate about King Louis regime. The mob fought the gaurds over the coarse of several hhours. Once they had won they dissasembled it. This caused King Louis to withdraw his royal troops from the city.

    At the time france was hungry and unemployed. This caused much unrest. A crowd of mostly women formed a mob and marched to the Palace of Versailles. They broke into the palace and murder the gaurds looking to kill the queen. At the end they got the king and his family to go to paris and “live among the people”. This almost made them prisoner in their own city.

    The polictical groups of france at the time. Jacobins supports a centralized Republic. Girondins campaigned against the monarchy butdid not like the way the revolution was going. Mass execution of this group happened during the reign of terror.

    War was declared because they were thought to be making a counter revolutionary alliance. Maximilien Robespierre opposed this idea but he lost the debate. The war was originally only with Austria but Prussia joined because they are allies. This is also believed to be the time the French revolution became radical. During this time the Royals were arrested and paranoia increased among the people this cause an increased number of executions.

    Because the King and Queen had attempted to escape france they were viewed as traitors. During this time Austria and Prussia were advancing and the economic situation was dire amking people more radicalized. This caused a large crowd of peopel to attack the palace and kill everyone inside. The king and queen were only arrested. This caused paranoia and over the next month suspected royalist were killed.

    Maximilien Robespierre unleashed the reign of terror. Anyone who was acused of doing counter revolutionary activities was executed. many did not get trialed and it did not take much to get executed. Ended with the death of Maximilien Robespierre.
