Guy Montag meets Clarisse and she asks him all about his job as a fireman. She wanted to know if he ever read the books before burning them, which makes Montag think a bit more about that subject.

Montag comes home and realizes that his wife Mildred overdosed on sleeping pills. He calls the ambulance, and the next day she remembers nothing about the incident.

Mildred tells her husband that Clarisse has died. Montag feels very sick and even has to stay home from work.

Montag asks the firefighters if we always burned books. Beatty tells Montag that they have always burned books.

Montag takes a book from a house, and after reading some of it, tries to show Mildred, but she doesn't understand.

Mildred grows frustrated with Guy's collection of books, and even tries burning them herself.

As Mildred's frustration grew, she pulls the fire alarm, calling the firefighters to come to the house to burn it down.

When the firefighters arrive at Montag's house, Beatty orders Montag to burn down the house, then arrests him. Montag turns the flamethrower on Beatty and kills him while the other firefighters just watch.

Montag escapes the Hound and runs to Faber's house where they develop a plan. Montag goes to the river to bathe and change clothes, then float to safety.

After Montag flees to safety, he finds "The Book People", and they watch as the city is bombed. Montag and The Book People begin to rebuild civilization.
