When Montag and Beatty arrive to burn the house, Mildred is already on her way out the door. She gets in a cab, and leaves Montag and her house behind for good.

Beatty gives Montag the flame thrower, and tells him to burn his house.

Beatty tells Montag that it was Mildred, Mrs. Bowles, and Mrs. Phelps who called the firehouse about Montag.

Beatty starts to hit Montag to get him angry. When Beatty whacks him, the earpiece falls out and Beatty picks it up.

Beatty realizes that someone had been spying on them. He threatens to use the earpiece to track Faber down and throw him in jail after he burn's Faber's house.

Montag is angry about what Beatty says. He doesn't want Faber to get hurt, so he uses the flamethrower on Beatty, killing him.

Montag punches the other two firemen to the ground and starts to try to run away.

The mechanical hound tries attacking Montag, but Montag uses the flamethrower on it, and is able to get away.

Once no one is able to stop him, Montag grabs some books in the garden that Mildred missed. He starts to run so that he is not caught at the scene of the crime.

Montag thinks that the police are chasing after him. He is almost run over until he falls, and the Beetle makes a sharp turn away. He finds out that they were not the police. Instead, they were children. Montag is angry because he wonders if those were the same kids who killed Clarisse.

Montag figures out that when he murdered Beatty, Beatty didn't try to stop him. Instead, Beatty gave Montag a weapon and tried to say things that would anger Montag enough to use it on him.
