    In 1838 Durham was sent to British North America to investigate the causes of the conflicts/ rebellion of 1837-38 in upper and lower Canada. Durham's report in 1839 led to a series of reforms and changes. This led to upper and lower Canada uniting into a single province and it also paved a way for a responsible government.

    The Indian act was made to assimilate the First nations. It was not directly referring to Metis or Inuit. the act was amended several times to focus on the removal of discriminatory sections.

    The head tax that was put on the Chinese was to discourage them from coming to Canada. At first, the amount they had to pay to get into Canada was 50 dollars in 1900 it increased to 100 and later to a maximum of 500 dollars in 1903. in total Canadian government collected about 23 million (343 million dollars in 2020).

    After the Red River Rebellion led by Louis Riel he lost the war because of the railway that had been build earlier. He was hanged for treason on November 16 1885.

    The conscription crisis was mainly a disagreement on if men should be conscripted to fight in WW1 and it also brought out problems between the relations with the French Canadian s and the English Canadians. The French were very against it.

    The white paper known as the "Statement of the government of Canada on the Indian policy" was a policy paper that attempted to abolish previous legal documents on indigenous people. The indigenous people called it The Red Paper because the white paper was racist.

    Bill 101 was made to be an official language in Quebec. It is also a Quebec Charter of human rights and freedoms. The Charter also protects the Indigenous languages of Quebec.

    The crisis was over a piece of land which was a burial ground that belonged to the Mohawk. Some non-indigenous people wanted to turn it into a golf course. After a police officer was killed the army was sent it to stop the protest.

    Quebec wanted another referendum because they were being alienated. Although the first referendum in 1980 wasn't that close this second one was too close for the government's liking, so they decided to listen to Quebec more.
