    Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla has arrived at the small parish of Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato where he introduced new industries like tile making, carpentry, tanning and many other things. He and Ignacio Allende met and became friends, therefore, Allende’s friends also became Hidalgo’s. Juan de Aldama, Miguel de Dominguez and his wife Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez all became a group that had organized a literary club that plotted the separation of the New Spain from the old.

    On this date, Spanish authorities searched the house of Epigmenio Gonzalez in Querétaro, found arms and ammunition and ordered the arrest of Epigmenio.
  • Independence Day

    Independence Day
    Ignacio Allende had been arrested and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez had sent Ignacio Pérez as a messenger for the news of the arrest. Ignacio Pérez told Juan de Aldama which informed Father Hidalgo. On this date at 2 in the morning Hidalgo rang the bells in the church. He gave a speech to all the Indians and mestizos, including a group of prisoners which was the Grito de Dolores and everybody responded with a very enthusiastic response.

    El Pípila Approaches
    Hidalgo approached Guanajuato along with hundreds of workers from the silver mines that surrounded that area. As Riaño led some soldiers into a strategic position of war, he was hit with a musket ball on the side of his head and died immediately to the side. The attackers were led by Juan José Martínez also known as El Pípila which attacked the Indians into the central patio.

    The two striking forces of Allende and Hidalgo took place on this day at Monte de las Cruces against the Spaniards and Hidalgo proved that his army could overcome a small, well equipped and disciplined professional army. With that happening the Spaniards were forced to retreat back into the city.

    Calleja has Retreated
    The royalist troops from the south caught up with the rebels. Hidalgo and Allende had the numerical superiority but General Calleja conducted his operations superbly and was aided by a battlefield accident.

    Hidalgo was decapitated by the firing squad and his head was fastened to a pole which was displayed on the charred wall of the granary in Guanajuato as an object to potential rebels.

    Morelos was captured by an enemy detachment and escorted to Mexico city where he was tried for treason and he was executed.
