King Carlos IV appointed his valido, Manuel Godoy, who signed the Treaty of Fontainebleau to form an alliance with Napoleon Bonaparte to invade Portugal travelling through Spain. Napoleon betrayed Godoy and invaded Spain instead.

Rafael del Riego forced Fernando VII to reinstate principles of the Constitution. In 1823, The Holy Alliance helped Fernando VII restore an absolutist monarchy.

A 10-year period of repression under Fernando VII began. In 1830, his daughter Isabel was born. *Salid Law prevented women from ruling, so he abolished it. His brother Carlos did not accept this change.
