    Rupert's Land

    In 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) was granted a charter by King Charles II. an area known as "Rupert's Land" (named in honour of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the king's cousin and the company's first governor).

    On July 1st, three British colonies became four provinces of the Dominion of Canada: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova scotia.

  • Red River Rebellion

    Red River Rebellion
    It was the first real problem that confedration had. Louis Riel the leader of the rebellion arrested men who included Thomas Scott. The execution of Thomas Scott was said by many to be turining point of the rebellion. Canadian govenment put out a bounty for Louis Riel and then Riel was then forced to exile. This also led to Macdonald approving the Manitoba Act which was basically about the Metis getting land and maintaing their culture
  • Manitoba and the Northwest Territories Join

    Joined confederation on July 15 1870. Needed suport from the federal government. They needed the funds from the government to thrive.
    the Northwest Territories joined because the Hudson Bay Company who owned their land sold their land to Canada and they also liked the railway Canada offered.
  • British Columbia Joins

    British Columbia Joins
    They joined because they feared the US would want to take over their lands. They needed government funds to support their growing population. Cnada also offered to extend their railway to British Columbia.
  • Prince Edward Island Joins

    The first time they were offered to join Canada they rejected the offer. That was because they had strong trading ties with the US and because they were the smallest province they were afraid they would lose power. They finally decided to join because Canada offered to buy land off of British landowners.
  • National Policy

    Prime minister John A. Macdonald introduced National Policy as a way to protect the manufactoring industry. It called for high tariff on imported manufactured items. this created Canada's "economic backbone."
  • Yukon Joins

    The Klondike gold rush attracted many Americans and people feared the United States would take over the area if they did not join Canada.
  • Saskatchewan and Alberta Join

    The region had farming, logging, mining, and the railway. The farming, logging, and mining would be good resources for Canada. They wanted funding from the government for school and other services.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Join

    The people were divided. Some people wanted to stay with Britsih but British did not want to support them any more. Canada offered to pay for roads and develop the colony.
  • Nunavut Joins Confederation

    They joind because they wanted more control of their land and resources
    They negotiated to regain control of their land as a territory joined to
    Canada.
