    The English noblemen forced King John of England to sign this. It limited the power of English monarchies because it would place him and all other future kings under a rule of law. That means that the kings couldn't do whatever they wanted, they were held to a standard of rules

    Reign of Henry III

    Reign of Henry III
    This was the start of modern parliament in England. He many unsuccessful moves including the disastrous papal invasion of Italy. This caused him to sign the Provisions of Oxford, England's first constitution. This limited his and the following monarchies power.

  • Petition Of Rights

    Petition Of Rights
    Was the declaration of rights and liberty of the people. It gave the townspeople a voice, limiting the control of the monarchy. It demanded
    1.that no freeman should be forced to pay any tax, loan, or benevolence, unless in accordance with an act of parliament;
    2.that no freeman should be imprisoned contrary to the laws of the land;

  • English Civil War

    English Civil War
    Started off as a dispute between Charles I and Parliament over the Irish insurrection. Parliament did not like how Charles I was splitting away from them and making his own decisions. Neither side was willing to back down thus starting the war. It showed Charles I that this wasn't an absolute monarchy and his input was being limited.

    Habeas Corpus Act
    Declared that any person imprisoned by the king would have a trial. This prevented from letting the king put everyone he doesn't like in jail. It showed that he didn't have absolute power

  • Overthrow of James II

    Overthrow of James II
    Was the overthrow of King James II. He reissued the declaration of Indulgences, which the church didn't agree with. Because of this William invaded England. This showed that it wasn't an absolute monarchy and he couldn't make decisions about indulgences and taxes alone.

    William and Mary
    Signed the English Bill of Rights to end the Glorious revolution. Fought against James II. They ended several centuries of tensions between the crown and the parliament.
