    The British were fighting in WW1 and needed more soldiers so conscription was used in Canada, and the french felt it was not their war so therefore they should not have to fight.

    The Duplessis Era (1930-1959)
    Duplessis was the leader of Quebec from 1930's-1959. Duplessis placed the hospital,school and all social services in the hands of the catholic church leading to an era of corruption. Duplessis started and promoted french nationalism. Significance to French -English Relations: Pushed Quebec away from the federal government.

    When Montreal Canadians star Maurice Richard was suspended for the rest of the season from accidentally hitting a linesman during a fight there was out rage from the French Canadian side on his suspension being too long, while English Canadians felt it was just. Significance to French- English Relations: Creates desire for movement towards French independence and heightens tensions between French and English

    The Quiet Revolution (1960's)
    The 60's brought on a new leader, Jean Lesage and a lot of change for Quebec. Lesage brought the change in the government with things like creating Hydro Quebec, Modernizing their education system, taking their health and social services out of the church and improving the status of women. All this change was done without violence and protests Significance to French English Relations: Saw the growth of French nationalism and calls for separation from Canada

    Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was an advocate for Quebec and in 1969 his government pass the Official Languages Act making the French Language an official language of Canada. All government agencies had to have every service in both French and English. Significance for French English Relations: Made the French Language equal to the English
  • The FLQ crisis

    The FLQ crisis
    The FLQ crisis was when 2 political members were kidnapped by the FLQ and one political member is murdered to try to bring Quebec closer to independence. Pierre Trudeau then enacted the Wars Measures Act in order to keep the rest of Canada safe. Significance of French English Relations: Violence created more tensions between English and French, and created awareness to the independence movement

    Le Parti Quebecois was a political party in Quebec, it was the first political party that Quebec elected that was for Quebec independence. French English relations: More strain because Quebec was officially committed to try to separate leaving many Canadians uncertain

    The independent Referendum Part:1
    This would be the first referendum that Quebec has ever held and the results of the referendum was 20% of Quebeckers voted for independence and 80% to stay in Canada. Many Quebeckers voted no because they feared american dominance Significance for French English Relations: Feared the referendum and felt lots of anxiety and anger towards it,felt relieved after.

    The Night Of Long Knives
    Prime Minster Trudeau wanted to bring the constitution home and revise it, 8 provinces did not agree with him.Trudeau calls a meeting with the 8 other provinces.That night all 7 provincial leaders stayed in the same hotel except for Quebec leader who stayed in Quebec. The other leaders discussed Trudeau's idea and decided to agree with him leaving Quebec in the dark. Quebec never signed the constitution. Significance: Quebec felt betrayed by the English.

    Prime Minster Brian Mulroney tried to hold another meeting to get Quebec to sign the new constitution. An issue with this was there was a new clause in the constitution which referred to a "distinct society" which worried many citizens and Quebec ultimately didn't sign it Significance: Sparked a new wave of Quebec independence movement

    Referendum Round 2
    Quebec is now holding another referendum to leave Canada, the no side wins with 50.6% and the yes loses with 49%. Under the Clarity Act of 1999 stated that Quebec did not have the right to separate unilaterally.
