This action has led to the political party known as the Union Nationale and there premier named Maurice Duplessis. i think this event was very important because it will be a very big influence on the French Nationalism.

    In the 1930's Duplessis has blamed the Canadian and American businesses and he also blamed the government for the problems that were occurring in Quebec. Duplessis's actions led to "the Great Darkness"

Duplessis has kept many secrets from the public which lead Quebec into becoming corrupt and Duplessis decided not to make any political or economical advancements. this event is very important because it led to The Quiet Revolution in the 1960's

    Maurice Richard
    Maurice Richard who plays for hockey team Montreal Canadians has gotten in a fight and accidentally hit a linesman. Due to Richards actions English NHL president Clarence Campbell suspended Maurice for the rest of the season.The French people believed that the harsh punishment was a way to humiliate French-Canadians by suspending their best player. this event was important because it lead to the Richard Riots.

    Richard Riots
    Clarence Campbell, NHL president at the time, attended a Montreal Canadians game after Maurice's suspension. When the fans noticed Campbell in the arena a riot broke out and lead its way outside the arena. The event caused $100,000 damages, 37 people got injured and 90+ people got arrested. this is an important event because the people wanted to separate more now.

    After Maurice Duplessis died, a new liberal man has come into power by the name of Jean Lesage. Once Jean Lesage was elected he promised the people two things: both economic and social standards and for greater recognition to the non English speaking people. this event is important because it leads to the Quiet Revolution.

    During the Quiet Revolution many changes were done. A few of these changes are: allowing students to study science, technology, provincial health care, and the influence of the church declined among many others. The status of women who previously had the status of a minor was improved. This is important because it is a major stepping stone in the birth of separatism.

    The Quiet Revolution led the Quebeckers to start believing that Ottawa should not be as English speaking and that more there must be more Quebec cabinet ministers. This is a very important event because it gave an indication to the Quebeckers saying this is not fair and we must stand up.

    The FLQ are a terrorist organization active from 1963-1970. They killed numerous civilians and officials in Quebec in an attempt to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada. This is important because they are the reason for the October Crisis.

    Lester B. Pearson felt that something must be done about the separatist wave in Quebec. So he established the RCBB (Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism) which says that Canada must be a bilingual country with two official languages English and French. this is a important event beside the government has taken the advice of the french people.

    Charles De Gaulle the president of France visits Quebec. Charles said Vive le Quebec Libre which is a separatist slogan used by the FLQ. This event is important because the relationship between Canada and France were strained due to his speech and it didn't recover until Charles De Gaulle died in 1969.

    When Pierre Elliot Trudeau got elected as prime minister of Canada, he passed the Official Languages Act which made Canada a bilingual country with French and English as its two official languages.

    James Cross a British diplomat is kidnapped by two FLQ members in Montreal. The FLQ demanded 4 things in return: the release of the political prisoners,publication of FLQ manifesto, Transportation to either Algeria or Cuba and $ 500,000 in gold bars. it is important because it is just the beginning of the October Crisis.

    on October 10 four FLQ members kidnap Pierre Laporte, and the Quebec labour minister. 2 days after on October 12 troops in Ottawa protected the government officals and the buildings. this event is important because it leads to The Creation of War Measures Act to start

    Pierre Trudeau enacts the War Measures Acts in which took the rights of Canadians and gave the opportunity to police officers to monitor suspects for 21 days and without trial for 90 days. 464-497 people were arrested in total. this event is very important because it allowed the police to catch some FLQ members.
  • October Crisis is Over

    Pierre Laporte's body was found on October 18. on December 4 police have rescued James Cross who was being held by the FLQ members for 59 days. on December 28 the FLQ members who killed and kidnapped Pierre Laporte have been arrested. this event is important because the October crisis has finally ended.

    Bill 22
    Many immigrants are immigrating to Canada and most of them prefer to learn English rather the French. Hearing that the French Canadians become upset because French is the 2nd official language. And so a new legislation called Bill 22 is passed by. this bill states the parents' rights to chose what language their children will learn is very limited. this event is important because it becomes mandatory to learn French.

    Le Parti Quebecois was elected and his goal was to separate Quebec from Canada. this is an important event because its the first time that the french people can vote.

    Le Parti Quebecois passed on Bill 101 which was a bill that was to be used in courts and businesses in French. due to the results French has been the language of the work place which made the English and Quebeckers furious. which lead them to move to Toronto and Calgary. this is important because it made the people who didn't like the rule found a new place to live.

    Pierre Trudeau was against the idea of Quebec separating from Canada. After more then half of the population of Quebec voted for the Referendum for independence with 60% people saying saying no and 40% saying yes. This event is very important because more Quebeckers voted no rather then yes.

    Rene Levesque has created a referendum where which 20% less Quebeckers voted that they still wanted independence while 84% of the others did not. this is important because it looks like Quebec might become independent at last.
