Peninsular War
After joining Spanish forces in the Penisular war against the French, and after participating in several battles San Martin started to make contact with South American supporters for indpendence from Spain -
His Plan in action
San Martin put his plan in action, to defeat the Spanish force. His plan was to make use of the alternative path to the viceroyalty of Peru (which involed a creation of a new army). The army of the Andes, in the Province of Cuyo. He lead the crossing of the Andes to Chile, and prevailed over the Spanish forces. -
Protecter of Peru
After seizing control of Lima he was appointed Protecter of Peru, and Peruvian indpendence was offically declared on the 28th of July 1821. (nine days later).
