    James I agrees to rule to England's law and customs. Vey soon though Parliament and James did not get along very well. They constantly argued about Divine right, money, and foreign policy. James also had to deal with religious groups. The Dissenters were people who were different from the Catholic Church. The Puritans were people who were trying to “purify” the church and its practices. James threatens to drive the puritans out of the country.

    Charles I went into power like an absolute monarch. He also put his enemies in prison without trial and made the nation pay a lot in taxes.

    A civil war broke out and lasted until 1651. It was between the Cavaliers, People who's supported Charles and the Roundheads, People who supported Parliament. In 1647, Oliver Cromwell, commander of the Roundheads defeated the Cavaliers in many battles.

    Parliament tried Charles in court and won. Charles was later executed and his reign as king ended. He was executed by giving the signal himself and after making a prayer he was killed.

    Parliament passed a law banishing most Catholics to poor land in the West of Ireland. Any Catholic that disobeyed orders was allowed to be killed for breaking the law.

    As more challenges came, Cromwell later took the title as “Lord Protector”. He then ruled as a dictator through the army. Cromwell believed that poor men should have as much say in the government as rich men.

    Oliver Cromwell passed away, very quickly, puritans lost their power in England. Mostly everyone was sick of military rule and the Puritan ways.

    After Cromwell died, they called off the banishing of Charles II. Charles returned to England and became a monarch ruler. Puritans ideas of Government, morality, equality and education survived still when Charles II took the throne.

    In the late 1600's there became political parties. They were the Whigs and the Tories. Tories were usually aristocrats, or very rich people. They believed in maintaining the old traditions. The Whigs defended the principles of Glorious Revolution.

    James II took the throne after Charles II. Made his subjects mad by suspending laws for no reason and out of nowhere. English Protestants were afraid of James restoring the Roman Catholic Church.

    Parliamentary leaders decided to invite King James daughter who was protestant, and her husband William III of Orange to be the future rulers. When William and Mary regrouped with the army James II went to France. This was known as the glorious revolution since their was no bloodshed.

    William and Mary had to accept many contracts before they could be crowned King and Queen of England. These contracts were known as the English Bill of Rights. What the Bill of Rights did was that it made sure Parliament had more control of power than the King and Queen.
