  • Writing my name

In preschool, we had an event called "grandparents day," and my nana came to my classroom. I have a cherished photo of her hovering over my shoulder as I grinned and wrote my name on a piece of paper.
  • 1-10

In 1st grade, my teacher was german and would take the time to teach us how to count in german. Though I never learned german as a second language, her ability to use the classroom as a stage for culture integration (even if it's just numbers 1-10) heavily influenced my current decision to want to be an elementary school teacher.
  • North Pole Story

In elementary school, one of my favorite books from the "media center" was a book about Santa going on a surfing vacation. My favorite part of the book was actually the author- she was a young girl! This inspired me :)
  • A Call from Mrs. Donaldson

In 3rd grade for homework, we used to have to write paragraphs with our vocabulary words. I would usually write a short story about a girl and boy falling in love. I remember that at one point, my teacher actually called my mom to see if I had a boyfriend... in 3rd grade!!!
  • Mr. Peanut

When I was little, I used to write stories for my dad about the Planter's peanut character, which was something we always joked about. He would even call me his "little peanut."
  • The Preamble

Growing up in America, one thing I remember doing in 5th grade was using my linguistic skills mixed with my memory to memorize and recite the preamble of the constitution!
  • Middle school mermaids

In 6th grade, I had a writing project that required me to write a short story. Based off of some recent reading, I decided to write a short story about mermaids. Although, it wasn't really "short" ... it was 6 and 1/2 pages!

    Tastes of language

In middle school, I took french for two years. Then, I continued for 2 more years in high school. After that, I switched it up and took Spanish my last two years! I am not fluent in either but I do find language learning very fascinating.
  • Poetry, please!

Towards the end of 8th grade, my English teacher encouraged me to submit a poem into a poetry competition. i ended up writing a poem about 2 pages long and had the confidence to submit it. I didn't win anything, but I was proud of myself!
  • Hidden College Essay

My college essay was about my father and I's rocky relationship- honing in on a specific memory of him and I arguing. In this, I had learned to later overcome and have peace about. To this day, i haven't shown him the essay.
