  • The Petition of Right was Passed

The Petition of Right was Passed
This right showed who had what power. This document showed the amount of distrust Parliament had in the monarchs. Monrchs could no longer tax the citizens of the country when ever. This really shoed how annoied Parliament was with the monarchs. They wanted to make sure the monarchs were not as powerful as they have been.
  • The Start of the English Civil War

The Start of the English Civil War
The start of the war showed that people would no longer put up with all of the stuff they had been dealing with. It showed that some of the members of Parliament could not agree with the king (Roundheads) and others did agree with him. (Cavaliers). They would not compromise and would need to learn how to. If both could not work together, and the monarch could not rule by himself, who would rule the country?
  • The End of the English Civil War

The End of the English Civil War
Parliament won for two reasons, they became allied with Scotland, and there was a Parliamentary army under Oliver Cromwell. This showed who was more powerful. Clearly Parliament had the power and the peopl behind them to show that they were doing the better thing. A monarch could not run this country alone. He needed a group of people to help him make decisions and not become too powerful.
  • Charles I Executed

    Charles I Executed
Charles ruled from 1625 to 1649. He was executed as a public criminal. Right after he died Parliament took away monarchy, the House of Lords, and the Angelican Church. Now the Parliament was doing exactly what Charles did. Isolating themselves. How were people going to be happy, fight and give money to their country if they cant be themselves? This was an important mve toward making a monarch and Parliament.
  • Delcaration of Indulgence

    Delcaration of Indulgence
Charles II had sypathies for those who could not practise their own religion. He felt everyone should be able to have their own beliefs if they were not hurting anyone. He issued this indulgence that allowed Catholics and Non-Angelica Protestants to practice their religion. Parliament made all civil and military officials swear an oath against the document of transubstansiation. Parliament and the monarchy were stil not on the same page, but at least a monarch stood up for the people.
  • Glorious Revolution

    Glorious Revolution
This event occurred when King James II left for France because in November of 1688 William of Orange arrived with his army to take over. In 1689 Parliament voted William III and Mary II as the monarchs. This was a bloodless revolution (aka the Glorious Revolution). They became the first limited monarchy.
  • The Bill of Rights

    The Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights limited the power of monarchs and guaranteed civil liberties to the priviledged classes. Anytime the monarchs wanted something to happen they had to bring it up with Parliament which met every 3 years. It also prohibited Catholics from overtaking the thrown.
