Before 1784 there were only 2 colonies in the maratime region; Nova Scotia and P.E.I. In that year Nova Scotia was divided into 3 and New Brunswick and Cape Breton were created.

After the discussions at Charlottetown, the task before the delegates was now to create a formal union agreement. Governor Gordon expanded the New Brunswick delegation to include Peter Mitchell and Charles Fisher.

In 1866 there was another election and pro confederation won, then they joined with Nova Scotia and held a final conference in London to finalize confederation -
it was the final in a series of conferences or debates that led to Canadian confederation in 1867. Sixteen delegates from the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick gathered with officials of the British government to draft the British North America Act, 1867.

In Saint John, the Volunteer Artillery fired a 21-gun salute to mark the beginning of the new Dominion, and an impromptu gathering of several thousand people paraded through the city streets. As the parade passed through an anti-Confederation neighbourhood, street fights broke out.
