My Technology Story

  • First Computer

    First Computer
Early on when I was around 4 or 5, I got my first experience playing with a personal home computer. It ran on Windows 95, and I used it to play Magic School Bus games to teach me about dinosaurs. Little did I know how much computers and technology would start to influence the world in the coming years. Image from thenextweb.com

    Cable Internet
Sometime around this time frame, my house finally upgraded from old dial-up into cable Internet. This completely revolutionized my computer experience and no longer did I have to worry about random calls interrupting my access. Image from Amazon.com

    First Cellphone
On my 13th birthday I received my first mobile telephone, a Motorola Razr. I tried out texting for the first time with the clunky number keys and did not really enjoy it. I ended up only using it for the occasional call. Image from Wikipedia

    True Mobile Browsing
Towards the end of high school, I received an iPhone. I had never been much of a fan of using mobile phones, but this one brought with it the Safari browser. My previous phone had some Internet capability, but it was clunky and difficult to use. The touch screen and Safari browser actually made using the Internet on a mobile device a pleasant experience instead of a struggle. Years later, I couldn't imagine life without Google in my pocket. Computer Parts
I had always used pre-made computers, but I had found that the video card in my current computer was not quite powerful enough. I purchased an upgraded video card and swapped it out myself. This was my first time ever messing with computer hardware and experimenting with the different parts. A year later I would gut almost the entire computer and replace everything on the inside, giving me the computer I am using today. Image from Amazon.com
  • Video Game Modding

    Video Game Modding
For some reason I cannot remember, I decided to dabble a bit with the concept of modding one of my new computer games. After following a few tutorials and using similar mods as examples, I manged to create my own mod. This mod added new game portraits to create a new alien race. This experience of tweaking code helped me get an idea of what coding actually entailed and got me interested in learning more. Image from steamcommunity.com

    First Game
Once school let out from the Spring 2016 semester, I started trying to teach myself how to code. I eventually settled on trying out Python as a language and found a few tutorials. About a month later, I had finished my first simple game. The game used simple text based images and keyboard input to advance. Image from my game
