Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born in Guanajuato on May 8, 1753. His parents were Cristóbal Hidalgo y Costilla and Ana Maria Gallaga.

At 17, he became a teacher of philosophy and theology. In 1778 he became a philosophy and theology teacher.

At dawn on September 16, 1810, he launched the famous "Cry of Dolores" haranguing the people to take up arms and fight against the Spaniards who supported Joseph Bonaparte as the new king of Spain.

Miguel Hidalgo led a patriotic army and organized aa Guadalajara government.Then, he abolished slavery of blacks and indigenous tribute.

But the realists recovered positions and defeated at the Calderon Bridge battle (January 17, 1811).

Hidalgo tried to escape to the United States, but was captured. He was shot in Chihuahua on July 30, 1811.
