The Mexiacan Peninsulares and criollos teamed up and fought with military leader Augustin de Iturbide and captured Mexico City. They later declared Mexico an indeoendent country.

Iturbide declared himself Emporer, but the people did not like him and he was forced to leave the country and never return.

Iturbide returned to Mexico in 1824 with a small group of followers. He was soon captured though, and then executed.
