  • French Revolution

    French Revolution
    In 1807 the French invaded Portugal. They went through the country capturing land and killing governemnt officials. King Joao VI and his son Pedro fled to Brazil with a British naval escort.

    King Joao VI arrived in Brazil
    On March 7, 1808 King Joao VI arrived in Rio De Janeiro. He opens up the ports to foreign trade and gives the country new luxuries, such as printing presses and iron mills.
  • New King of Spain

    New King of Spain
    King Ferdinand of Spain is overthrown by napoleon Bonaparte and the French army. Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother was put in the place of King Ferdinand. This act angered many Spanish and worried many Spanish colonies in the Americas, such as Bolivia.

    FIrst major revolution during Bolivian Independence movement. Sparked by previous revolutions by th indigenous people and the French leader of Spain.
  • Chilean Independence Day

    Chilean Independence Day
    Chilean Forces joined other Spanish colonies in early 1810, under control of Bernardo O'Higgins, to break their political ties to Spain. The South American forces won in a strategically fought battle at Chacabuco, ending all Spanish control over Chile on September 18, 1810.

    On April 25, 1821 King Joao VI was forced to leave Brazil and return to Portugal. He left his son Pedro in charge of Brazil. Later that year the leaders of Portugal voted to abolish the kingdom of Brazil.
  • Peru Gains Independence

    Peru Gains Independence
    Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín joined forces in 1820 to free Peru from Spansih rule and succeeded in doing so in 1821. Independence was declared by José de San Martín in 1821, emancipation was completed in 1824, and Spain only recognized Peru's independence in 1879.
  • Brazilian Independence

    Brazilian Independence
    After Joao VI moved the capital of Portugal to Brazil he granted Brazil with new luxuries that they never had. He would soon be forced to leave taking all of the luxuries with him. Joao left Pedro I has the new leader of Brazil but the government did not havenearly as many abilities as they had before so naturally they wanted securalism and the right to rule themselves. They declared independence on Septemer 7, 1822. The Portuguese military left Brazil peacefully and Brazil became independent.

    this is the date that an assembly of notables voted to make Upper Peru in to a separate country and also the day that Bolívar had won the Battle of Junín the year before.
  • Portugal agrees to Independence

    Portugal agrees to Independence
    On August 29, 1825 Brazil officially became an independent country when the leaders of Portugal signed a treaty allowing Brazil to become an independent country as long as they helped repay their debt that they caused. Britain followed suit.
