When the two meet, Clarisse asks Montag a question pivotal to the story. She asks, "Are you happy?"
This makes him question everything for some reason. The question makes him think really hard about his world. -
Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy, this question makes him think hard. He concludes his thoughts and starts giving Clarisse attitude.

Montag questions Mildred, he suspects she is on something. He assumes this because she is out cold on the bed. He then yells her name and runs over to see sleeping pills which proves him to be correct. Later a bunch of people come and pump out her stomach.

The Woman goes mad and drops the match even though Beatty and Montag tell her not to. Previously they start counting and the the Woman says she has the potential to light up the house just as much as they do. So she ignites the house herself to protect her books.

Shortly after Clarisse dies in the car accident, Montag starts getting an interest in books. He is aware he must hide his new interest.

After Montag's interest sparks. He starts to question if people will go after him. After a while he knows it isn't right.
