  • Elizabeth dies childless

    Because of Elizabeth not having any children the throne was passed to her cousin James the first. James believed in divine right and often clashed with parliament. Looking to gain Absolutism.
  • James The first Dies and give the throne to his son

    when he dies he gives the throne to his son who soon would rule as an absolute monarch.
  • Charles the First takes the throne

    After James the first dies in 1612 Charles the first takes the throne, when he inherits the throne he rules as an absolute monarch.
  • Charles the first signed the potion to dissolve the parliament.

    Charles made this decision all by himself, and for the next 11 years he would rule with out the Parliament.
  • Charles once again summons parliament into England

    In order to get funds and suppress the Scottish rebellion he had to call in the call in the parliament to help him. Which would give the Parliament some power, dwindling his own.
  • Parliament is known as the Long Parliament

    The parliament became the Long Parliament because it had been on and off with England until 165, making it harder to achieve absolutism.
  • The English Civil War

    English civil war that lasted from 1642 to 1651. This war posed a major challenge to absolutism. The forces of revelation triumphed and overthrew the forces.
  • Charles the First is Executed

    In 1649 the Parliament put the king on trial. The trial condemned him to death as a murder, tyrant, Monarch, trader, and public enemy. After doing a brief prayer he signaled the executor to go and with one swing severed his neck.
  • Exiling the Catholics

    In 1652 the Parliament passed a new law exiling most Catholics to barren the land of west Ireland, and any of the Catholics that were found disobeying the law would be killed on sight.
  • The Commonwealth Ends

    Soon after Oliver Cromwell died the puritans lost their power over England. Many people where tried of the military rule, the strict ways and rules that they had to follow. Giving more power to the King.
  • James the Second is Forced to Flee

    Charles brother, James, inherits the throne after his death. An unlike Charles, James practiced his catholic faith openly. He suspended laws, and appointed Catholics high office, and shared his power, in doing so he made is subjects angry with these actions, many of them feared that he would restore the Roman Catholic Church.
  • The English Bill of Rights

    Before Mary and William came to power they had to except several rules made the Parliament so that they were restricted and could not have absolute rule. The Bill of rights ensured superiority to parliament and also gave the house of commons power.
