Crucial Events in the French Revolution

  • First Meeting

    The first meeting in 175 years took place of the Estates-General, at Versailles.
  • National Assembly Was Voted On

    The Third Estate voted to establish the National Assembly, causing the end of absolute monarchy and the start of a representative fovernment. It was also the first act of revolution. - Tennis coart oath.
  • Bastille

    A mob searching for gunpowder and arms attacked the Bastille, a prison. The mob attacked the guard and took control of the building. Attacked the prison commander and several guards died.
  • Speeches made

    Nobles made great speeches, declared their love of liberty and equality. They were joined by other memmbers of the National Assembly. Got rid of the feudal privileges of the First and Second Estates. Made commoners equal to the nobles and clergy.
  • A Statement of Ideas

    The National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideas, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
  • Parisian Women Riots

    Thousands of Parisian women rioted over the rising price of bread. Brandishing knives, axes and other weapons, women marched on Versailles. Demanded the National Assembly take action to provide bread. Turned anger to king and queen. Broke into the palace, killing some guards. Women demanded Louis and Marie Antoinette to return to Paris. Later they did
  • The Year of 1790

    The government took control of the church, and the church became part of the state. Assembly reforms France.
  • Royals Escaping

    The royal family tried to escape to the Austrian Netherlands, near the border they were stopped and returned to Paris under guard.
  • New Constitution

    The National Assembly completed the new constitution, approved by Louis.
  • War Declared

    The Legislative Assembly declared war after Austria and Prussia urged the French to restore Louis to his position as an absolute monarch
  • France is a Republic

    The new governing body, the National Convention took office. Declared France a republic.
