    Wars of Independence from Spain

    Napoleon was seeking to expand and successfully took over Spain and handed to his brother and the Spanish rebelled and gained their independence.

    The war was between Argentina and Portugal. Jose de San Martin became the captain in 1804.

    The army set off, but the Spanish forces in Chile were expecting him. In order to fool the Spanish, San Martin told them an incorrect route. He used the Indians to help him confuse the Spanish. The royalist armies went far south. In February 1817, the army entered Chile unopposed.

    When the Spanish realized they were tricked, they worked fast to keep the army out of Santiago. The Patriots were victorious in this battle. The Spanish fled and San Martin rode into the city at the head of the army.
  • Battle of Maipu

    San Martin controlled the Patriots and he met the Spanish at the Battle of Maipu. The patriot army won and they killed 2000 Spanish during the battle. They also captured 2000 people, while also seizing the Spanish artillery. This defeat allowed for the liberation of Chile. Spain was no longer a threat anymore.

    San Martins army began to close in on Lima. On September 7th, he captured Pisco and then he captured Haucho on November 12th. The royalist army moved and left Lima abandoned all for San Martin to capture. San Martin helped prevent an uprising by the slaves of Lima.

    It happened in Guayaquil, and Bolivar had already taken control. San Martin came back from the meeting with Bolivar disappointed. On September 20th San Martin resigned from his protectorship. After this San Martin spent the rest of his life in exile. He died in 1850.
