  • Hudson Bay Company founded

    Hudson Bay Company was formed in 1670, from a charter granted by Britian to finance the company. This company controlled a large amount of territory. Trading posts and forts were built along Hudson Bay and downstream from many major rivers. An agent controlled the store at each trading post where the trade took place. The main form of currency was beaver pelts. Furs were bought by Aboriginal people in the spring and fall.

    Fall of Quebec (Battle of the Plains of Abraham)

    The final battle took place near dawn on September 12. Before dawn the British climbed the cliffs near Quebec and came to the city gate from the west. This battle took place on the Plains of Abraham, just outside of the city. The battle lasted only 15 minutes, as the French soldiers were overwhelmed by the British.

  • Northwest Company founded

    The Northwest Company was formed in 1779 in Montreal by fur trade merchants. These merchants wanted to break Hudson Bay Company's stranglehold over the fur trade. The Northwest Company's trading was done mostly by explorers, who lived seasonally with Aboriginal groups. Unlike Hudson Bay Company, the Northwest Company didn't set up forts.
  • Constitutional Act of 1791

    In 1791, Britain divided the colony of Quebec into 2 separate entities: Upper Canada and Lower Canada. Upper Canada kept British law and culture, and Lower Canada was able to keep its French laws and culture.

    The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I when Germany was forced to admit that they were responsible for World War I and had to pay back war reparitions. Germany also lost a fair amout of the land they had before the war.
