The Spainsh duke of Alva, under comand of Philip, took am army to punish the rebels. In one dau over 1,500 Protestants and other suspected rebels were excuted by the army and the duke.

Philip raised taxes in the Netherlands and tried to crush Protestantisn. Protestants formed mobs that swept through Catholic Churches. The Dutch ended up fighting Spain for 13 years.
