The first crusade was a military expedition of Christianity to try to get back the Holy Lands taken in the Muslim conquest of the Levant, resulting in getting back Jerusalem. It was started 27 November 1095 by Pope Urban II with the primary goal of responding to an appeal from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who wanted western volunteers to come to help to repel the invading Turks from Anatolia.
