    Birth of Muhammad

    Muhammad was confronted by the Angle Gabriel in a cave. He told Muhammad to preach the word of Allah to the world.

    Conquest of Mecca

    Muhammad and his army began to conquer Arabian cities and lands. They eventually seized Mecca in 630. After he conquered these cities, he spread his revelations and the word of Allah to his new people.

    Muhammad died in 633. He had appointed to successor, so his father-in-law, Abu Bakr became the caliph.

    The Umayyads took over after Imam Ali was killed. They ruled as Caliphs for nearly 100 years.

    Muslims conquer Spain

    In 711, the Muslims entered the Iberian Peninsula to spread the word of Allah. They won a 7-year long war and gained Spain.

    Abbasid Rule

    The Abbasids revolted and defeated the Umayyads in 750. They moved the capital to Baghdad.

    Abbasid Dynasty

    The Abbasids revolted against the Umayyads in 750 and took control of the Muslim Empire for the next 500 years. The Abbasid Caliphs were all descendents of Muhammad, therefore claiming their royalty.

    Crusades

    An order to capture the holy land was ordered by the pope in 1095. The next year the crusaders attacked the holy city of Jerusalem and took control. The muslims still fought back, regaining power several times until the crusaders withdrew their forces in 1291, ending the war.

    Crusaders take Jerusalem

    In 1099, the crusaders sacked Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the holy city for both Christianity and Islam. This resulted in a nearly 200 year struggle for the "holy city".

    Beginning of the Ottoman Empire

    The first Ottoman state in formed in Anatolia, Turkey. This empire becomes one of the most powerful in history.

    Ottomans Conquer Byzantine Empire

    The Ottomans conquered the Byzantine Empire in 1453. They soon after changed the name of the capital from Constantinople to Istanbul.
