Malcolm X

Here is where we found information about Malcolm X. Born Malcolm little, he was a huge supporter of the Nation of Islam. He was a minister and national spokesperson for the NOI. During his life he increased membership of the NOI by over 1500%. In addition, he was appointed by a leader of the religion, Elijah Muhammad, to build new mosques.

Here is where we found information about the Nation of Islam.The founder wanted black people to be independent and economically prosperous. The NOI believe that blacks were the chosen people of Allah (their god) and that they are superior. The stated goals of this religion are to improve the spiritual, mental, social, and economic condition of African Americans in the United States and all of humanity. They are now labeled as a hate group.

Islam vs. Nation of Islam

Here is where we found information about this topic. People who practice mainstream islam believe that there never has been a human form of god and the NOI believe that their founder was God. Equivalence of the races is important to Islam and black supremacy is the main importance of NOI. People are confused often if the two are linked or not but they are actually very different. Islam is about peace and equality and NOI is about superiority and separation. In Islam, Allah is their only god, but in NOI anyone can achieve godly status.

Here is where we founnd information on this topic. Malcolm was sent to prison. In prison, Malcolm X made decisions that altered the course of his life. He began to educate himself on the Nation of Islam and was convinced by his fellow inmates and his brother to convert to NOI. Despite the religious differences, he and MLK communicated for the common good of African Americans.

Malcolm X breaks away

Here is where we found information about this topic. He is silenced by the religion and decides to break away, creating his own religion. When he goes to Mecca on a hajj, he sees that people are all praying to the same god and has a revelation. He wants more equality and less extremity. His views soften and the OAAU is founded.

Farrakhan helps lead the Million Man March

Here is where we found information about this topic.They did this march to address the ills of black communities and call for unity and revitalization of African American communities. 850,000 African American men rallied at the national mall. Those who could not make it were asked to stay home from work or school to show their solidarity. In the year after over 1.5 million black men registered to vote for the first time.

Here is where we found information about this topic.The Nation of Islam believes in equivalence of the races and saw some major accomplishments. Voting rights and overall acceptance of African Americans resulted in the first footsteps towards equality.

Here is where we found information about this topic. The Nation of Islam continues to fight for rights for the African American Population. These rights are mostly economically and politically related. Modern day any minority, not just African Americans struggle largely with racism and profiling.
