    Malcom X BiographyMalcolm X was born on May 19th, 1925. Malcolm X’s was a minister and was murdered .His mother faced a mental breakdown and her children were split into different white foster homes. Enlightened by his brother's recent conversion into the Muslim religion, Malcolm X started to study the preachings of the Nation of Islam’s leader, Elijah Muhammad. Some original goals of the Nation of Islam was to be separate from white government. Malcolm X was appointed a minister and national spokesman in 1952.

    Wallace FardWallace Fard founded the Nation of Islam in the early 1930’s. Fard believed that Christianity was the white man’s religion and that it was forced upon African American’s when they were enslaved. Fard mysteriously disappeared and Elijah Muhammad became the leader of the Nation of Islam.

The ideas of the Nation of Islam come from the traditional Islam religion, but add black power and black nationalism.

    NOI accomplishments Some accomplishments of the NOI was converting African Americans to their native religion after being stripped of it due to slavery. Another accomplishment of NOI was spreading black power throughout the United States. One of the biggest accomplishments was the contributions with the Civil Rights Movement.

    link Malcolm began to study the teachings of the leader Elijah Muhammad. Muhammad believed that white people were trying to stop blacks from empowering themselves in social, political and economic situations. Malcolm became a devoted follower and was appointed a minister and national spokesman for the Nation of Islam. In just 11 years, he increased the number of members from 500 to 30,000.

    link Elijah failed to remain celibate until marriage, which is a rule in the NOI. He had affair with 6 different women. Malcolm was deeply hurt by Elijah's actions and broke his ties with the NOI because he felt it was built on lies. During this year he also made his pilgrimage to Mecca. When he returned, Malcolm had a new outlook on black and white relationships and hope for the future.

    link The Million Man March consist of people of all races and religions gathering in Washington D.C. They stood for 10+ hours sharing, learning, listening, hugging, laughing, and praying. There was no drinking or smoking, or outbreaks of fights. Many people stayed home from work and school to watch on television. To this day people see it as a very inspirational and important event.

    two problems or goals they continue to fight for today
    link 1 1.) a goal they are continuing to fight to day is the equal treatment of women of color. Black girls are 6 times more likely to get suspended from school than white girls, and there are 64,000 missing Black women and a very small amount of people acknowledge it.
    2.) They are still fighting against discrimination in everyday life, such as police brutality.
