This was the reign of Carinal Mazarin. His greatest Triumph came in 1648 at the end of the 30 year war. But the Nobles did not like him because of the taxes. He created a strong central government and ruled with iron fist. -

boundaries. -

The war ended in 1678 with the Treaty of Nijmegen. France gained several towns and a region called Franche-Comté. -

In 1701, England, Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and German and Italian states joined to stop the union of the French and Spanish thrones. The lwar is the War of the Spanish Succession.The costly war dragged on until 1714. The Treaty of Utrecht was signed in that year. -
