Spain calls a war against Great Britain
Spain had previously fought a war against the British called the Seven Years War (because it lasted seven years). They lost really badly, and decided they would gain back their title. Spain prepared very much for this war, and in 1779, they were finished preaparing. It was now time for them to declare war. -
Mexican war of independence starts
In 1810, the Mexican war of independence starts. This war lasted until 1821. In 1821, Spain accepts Mexican independence. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
This treaty was signed to end the Mexican-American war. Mexico surrendered to the US, and decided to make the treaty. This was the best decision for Mexico, because they were suffering a terrible defeat. -
The United States called a war against Spain
3,000 soldiers died during this war. It cost the US $250 million for this war. On December 10, 1898, Spain and the US sign a peace treaty in Paris (known as the Treaty of Paris). -
Spanish Civil War starts
This war started for many different reasons. One reason was the church. This is because the church had too much power and wealth, and the poeple did not like this. Another reason is the army. This is because there were too many men in the army who were not properly equipped. 500,000 people lost their lives fighting in this war. General Franco and his soldiers won the war. -
Toxic waste threat in Spain
A toxic waste spill threatened to destory a national park in Madrid. The toxic waste was headed towards the park, but people managed to block off the river before it reached the park. Although this part of Spain was not effected, Southern Spain was covered in waste. The land and everything on it was poisoned and destroyed. -
Spain switches currency
In 2002, Spain switches to a new currency. This currency is called the Euro. It is used by many other countries. -
Spain train bombing
This bombing happened at a train station in Madrid. There were 10 bombs with timers on them, ready to explode. The bombing killed 91 people, and injured 1,800. -
Plane crash
Just after the plane left the runway, it crashed, killing 154 people. Only 18 people survived. In the year 2008, this was the deadliest plane accident. -
Spain wins the FIFA World Cup
In 2010, South Africa held the FIFA World Cup. This is a big soccer game. Spain won. -
The Spanish Armada goes out
There were 150 ships in the Spanish Armada. The purpose of this was to invade England, and get them involved with the Catholic rule of Spain. On the way back, there was a terrible storm, and only 65 ships made it back to Spain.
