    Muhammad is born

    Muhammad is born in the of Mecca. He is raised by his noble family. He is well known for his honesty.

    Muhammad is visited by an angel

    At age 40, Muhammad is residing in a cave near Mecca. There he is visited by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel recites the first revalations of the Quran to Muhammad. He then tells him that he is God's prophet. Later, Muhammad tells his people to only worship one god. They don't agree and persecute him and his followers.

    The Hijrah

    Muhammad and his followers migrate to Yathri (later known as Medina) in order to escape persecution. The people there accept Islam. This marks the hijrah which means emigration. It also marked the start of the Islam calendar. In Medina, Muhammad builds an Islamic state based on laws from the Quran and the guidance given to him by God. He eventually invites other tribes and nations to Islam.

    Muhammad's return to Mecca

    Muhammad returns to Mecca with a large number of his followers. He enters the city peacefully, and eventually all its citizens accept Islam. The prophet clears all the idols and images, then remakes everything for one god worship.

    Muhammad's death

    Muhammad dies from a prolonged illness. The Muslim community then choose his father-in-law, Abu Bakr, as his successor.

    Muslims enter Egypt

    Muslims enter Egypt and free the people from the Byzantine army. They consider their quest a liberation because the people were under oppresive rule.

    Islam continues to grow

    Islam begins to expand into North Africa.

    The end of the 4 righteous caliphs

    Imam Ali is killed, ending the rule of the 4 righteous caliphs. This is also the start of the Umayyad rule.

    Islam expansion continues

    Muslims enter Spain and India. Almost the whole Iberian Peninsula is under Islamic control

    Muslims are defeated by French

    The French defeated the Muslims at Potiers.

    Abbasids take control

    The Abbasids take over rule from the Umayyads, shifting power to Baghdad.
  • Jul 31, 1000

    Islam in Africa

    Islam continues to grow throughout Africa.
  • Jul 31, 1099

    Jerusalem is taken

    Europeans takeJerusalem from the Muslims. Eventually the Muslims defeat the Crusaders and regain control of the holy land.

    Islam in Asia

    Islam keeps spreading through Asia.

    The Ottoman Empire begins

    The earliest Ottoman state is formed.
  • Jul 31, 1453

    The Ottoman take Constantinople

    The Ottoman conquer the Byzantine seat of Constantinople and change its name to Istanbul.

  • Muslims enter "Sham"

    Muslim enter the northern area of Arabia, known as "Sham".
