    The National Assembly was The Third Estate delegates. These delegates wanted to make changes to the government. Establishing the National Assembly was proclaiming the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of representative government. This vote was the first deliberate act of revolution.

  • The fall of Bastille

    The fall of Bastille
    The fall of the Bastille became a great symbolic act of revolution to the French people. An angry mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison. The mob overwhelmed the guard and seized control of the building.The attack on the Bastille claimed the lives of about 100 people. Ever since, July 14, Bastille Day has been a French national holiday.

  • The Rights of Man

    The Rights of Man
    National Assembly adopted a statement of revolutionary ideals naming it (influenced by the Declaration of Independence) Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. These rights included “liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.” The document guaranteed citizens equal justice, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. This event is important because it declared what the French were fighting for.

    The New Constitution
    The National Assembly completed the new constitution which created a limited Monarchy. It took much of the king's authority.     20,000 men and women invaded the Tuileries, the palace where the royal family was staying. The mob massacred the royal guards and imprisoned Louis, Marie Antoinette, and their children. The Prussian commander even threatened to destroy Paris if the revolutionaries harmed any member of the royal family. This event just shows how determined and angry the french revolutionaries were.

    The National Convention took office when the king called for a new legislature. It quickly abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. It granted adult male citizens the right to vote and hold office. This event established the republic in which they were fighting for.

    King Louis XVI was tried for treason. The National Convention had said his role was equivilant as a common citizen and prisoner. The Convention found him guilty and with a close vote, sentenced to the death penalty. This event shows how much power the National Convention had.

    Robespierre becomes Leader
    Robespierre became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He governed France as a dictator which became known as time of the Reign of Terror. It is stated that Robespierre justified his use of terror by suggesting that it enabled French citizens to remain true to the ideals of the Revolution. This event led to 40,000 peasants, urban poor, or middle class were executed during the Terror.

    When starting to fear for their own safety, some members of the National Convention turned on Robespierre. The members demanded to arrest and execute Robespierre.     Napoleon Crowned as Emperor
    Napoleon Bonaparte decided to make himself emperor, with the French voters supporting him. At the ceremony, the new emperor took the crown from the pope and placed it on his own head. This gesture signaled that he was more powerful than the Church. This event is important because it shows the new emperor and the power he holds and him ending the revolution.
