    When King Louis called in the representatives of all the estates, in hopes of raising taxes. This meeting had not been called to session in the last 175 years. The third estate was furious with the taxes and unfair representation

    The deputies, or representatives of the third estate form an assembly to advocate for the rights of the third estate
  • Tennis Court Oath declared

    Tennis Court Oath declared
    The deputies of the third estate are locked out of the meeting room, so they go to a huge tennis court. They swear that they will not stop meeting until a new constitution is written.

    In order to provide the militia with gunpowder, the commoners attacked the Bastille, a prison keep. After the guards surrendered, the people tore it down brick by brick

    Declaration of the Rights of Man
    The deputies wrote a declaration that stated that the government had to protect the natural rights of man. It did not mention the power of any king, meaning that a democracy was to be set in place.

    After King Louis the 16th was imprisoned, the legislative assebly formed a temporary govt. and made the laws.

    Execution of King Louis 16th
    The legislative assembly, in which Robespierre was on, decided that in order for the revolution to live the King must die. Louis was beheaded by the guillotine.

    After the death of Louis 16th, a 12 man committee was formed to make sure that there was control in France, and that no one was fighting against the revolution. Was during reign of Terror/the cause.

    Many people are arrested and beheaded on the grounds that they are enemies of the revolution. Most people were arrested on false terms, only because their neighbors turned against them.

    Execution of Maximilien Robespierre
    Maximillian Robespierre, the man responsible for the start of the Terror, had caused so much paranoia in his circle, and in the committee, that everyone turned against him. He shot himself in the jaw as a failed suicide attempt. Died ridiculed by those who had once admired him.

    After the end of the Terror, a group of five people who were keeping the country together in an economic pause, were trying to figure out next step for the country.

    Napoleon, by then a military leader, took over France in a coup d'etat (military force). No one tries to stop him, more are happy that he takes over.

    Gave church back some power, but had no influence in laws. Gave Napoleon support from the church and from peasants.

    This code gave permission for slavery on colonized islands and limited freedom of speech and press. Gave a uniform set of laws and fair rules. Overall helped the economy

    Napoleon crowns himself emperor of France
    Napoleon crowned himself emperor, even though the pope was the one who was supposed to crown him. Napoleon decided he wanted more power.

    Napoleon is banished to the island of St. Helena after being defeated in many wars, such as Waterloo. he is kept under guard of British soldiers until he dies.
