    Government's debt

    The government was in debt for the huge spending of the king Louis XVI and the queen Marie Antoinette. Also, they were in debt from the previous kings. To add on, king Louis borrowed a big amount to help the colonists in the American revolution, since Great Britain was France's rival.

    Due to bad weather, crops started die, the bread's price started to double, taxes started to increase, and many people were suffering of starvation.

  • Louis tries to escape

    Louis tries to escape
    Some of king Louis' advisers warned him and his family that they were in danger so they decided to escape France and do to Austrian Netherlands. But as they approached the boarder, they were captured and returned to Paris under guard.

    The National assembly completed the new constitution which was approved by king Louis XVI. This new constitution made the government a limited constitutional monarchy, and created the Legislative Assembly which had the power to create laws and approve/reject declarations of war.

    The French revolution ended when Robespierre went to the guillotine after the members of the National Convention turned on him and demanded his arrest and execution. Robespierre became leader of the Committee of Public Safety and governed France as a dictator.
