    After losing the election, Nationalists led by Francisco Franco fought the Republicans who sided with the democratically elected Spanish Republic. Nationalists won and began Franco's rule until 1975.

    Red terrors were acts of violence committed by left side groups. These acts included killing of tens of thousands of people as well as attacks on landowners, industrialists, and politicians, and the desecration and burning of monasteries and churches.

    Francoist concentration camps

    These were many of the concentration camps that were created and coordinated by the Servicio de Colonias Penitenciarias Militarizadas. The first concentration camp, near the location of the castle of El Hecho, was created by Francisco Franco on July 20 1936. The last concentration camp, located at Miranda del Ebro, was closed in 1947. The main function of the camps was to detain Republican prisoners of war.
