    Britain Abolishes Slavery
    In 1807 Britain becomes the first European power to abolish the slave trade. Slavery was not abolished throughout the rest of the British empire until 1833.

    In 1810 Fr. Miguel Hidalgo started the Mexican revolutionary war against Spain. After 11 years of fighting Spain finally granted them their independence.

    A meeting of the European countries to restore peace and legitimacy to the monarchs in Europe after the downfall of Napoleon.

    Greek Revolt

    In 1821 Greece revolted against the Ottomans and were supported by various European countries. In 1830 Greece was granted independence.

    French Revolution of 1830
    When Louis XVIII died in 1824 his younger brother Charles X became king. He was an absolutist and in July of 1830 he took away the freedoms Louis XVIII had given them. People in Paris revolted and Charles X abdicated and fled to England. Louis Philippe became the new king.

    Outraged that the Congress of Vienna had joined Holland and Belgium together the Belgians revolted and were given their own country again.

    On December 29, 1845 Independent Texas voted to join the United States as its 28th country. Only just earlier had Texas fought a war with Mexico to gain their independence.

    "February Days" Revolution in France
    In February of 1848 the government took steps to silence the French people and so the French people took to the streets. Louis Philippe abdicated and the Second French Republic was set up.

    The American Civil War was a war fought between the South and the North over various issues such as slavery and representation in the government. The North Won and America came back together as a country.

    The Paris Commune

    In 1871 rebels in Paris set up the Paris Commune which was a form of radical government. When the government set out to stop them they fought back for several weeks until the government crushed them.
