    Divide French Society
    First estate is for the Clergy. They have the best of everything.
    Second estate is the Nobility and these people have some power but their power is declining.
    Third estate is the rest of the people. They lived a tough life. They were the only ones who had to pay taxes and they were taxed heavily.
    They did this so that everyone knew were they stood in society.
  • Estates-General Meeting

    Estates-General Meeting
    Louis XVI brings in Jaque Necker to help get them out of debt. Jaque suggest that the first and second estates should pay taxes as well. Louis does not like his idea and fires him. The 3rd estate who was not well represented set out to form the National Assembly. They meet at an area called the tennis courts and pledged not to leave until they solve the problem.
  • Parisians Storm the Bastile

    Parisians Storm the Bastile
    More than 800 Pasisians assembled outside the gates of Bastille. This was a massive prison and what the people belived to hold gunpowder and weapons. The crowd was demanding guns and powder. The commander refused to give into their needs. After a while the guards began to shoot at the 800 people. After a bit the 800 strong broke thorough the gates and killed the general and 5 guards. They released prisinors and found that there was no weaponary.

    Rights of man stated that all men born French were free and Equal. They enjoyed Natural Rights. In this the said that taxes will be based on income. The next day there was a group of 6,000 women who marched 13 miles shouting "bread."They demanded to see the king. The king spoke to them and decided to leave his throne and return to his home country.

    Louis XVI tries to escape to Austria. He fails at the very last boarder checking. The King of Prussia and Emperor of Austria issure decleration Pilnitz. That turned out to be a huge bluff. Revolutionaries take threat very seriously and begin to prepare for war.

    Europeans increase boarder patrol with Emigres. They kill people from fleeing the country. Sans-Culottes (middle class) folks try to rise power and demand for a republic government. They fin the Jacobins who are middle class lawyers or intelectuals. The Jacobins us panmphletters and newspaper to spread the word about republic government.
  • Monarchy is Abolished

    Monarchy is Abolished
    There was a huge massacure at the Kings palace. Hundreds of radicals killed the kings guards and came after him. The crowd was describied as bloodthirsty. The national constituion brough equality to all men. In a meeting in September a radical group. Durning the meeting they agreed to abolish the monarchy. Louis XVI was convicted of being a traitor and he was decapeated.

    Robespierre and the Reign of Terror
    Robespierre a tough lawyer and hardy potitican became the leader of the newly formed Committe of Publich Safety. His enemies called him a tyrant. He was all for promoting religious toleration and wanted to abolish slavery. Robespierre started the reign of terror where they would kill anyone suspected of being a taritor.

    Reign of TerrorThis reign of terror was started was started by Robespierre. He would kill anyone who was like a traitor to France. There were 300,000 were arrested and 17,000 were executed. Most people were packed into horrific prisoins and left to die.After a while public safety was in danger. The people of france over throw Robespierre and he was arrested and he was killed.

    The constitution of 1795 set up a five-man system with a two-house legislative system. They were elected by male citizens only. Peace with russia and spain but still at war with Austria and Great Britian. Rise in Bread prices brought an up roar from the sans-culottes. People returing to france and showed measures of the church disaster.

    By 1799 the 10 years of the French Revolution had changed Frnace Dramatically. Revolution and War gave the French strong national idenity. The government rallied their sons and daughts to defend the natoin and spread nationalism. Keep the pride strong. The revoluton pushed for social reform and religious rolleration. Set up state school in place of church school. They organize systems to help poor people, old soliders, and war waidows. They tried to keep bread and living cost down.
